After a wait of six years, the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Sports is nearly here. This is the lens that photographers have been eagerly waiting for Sigma to launch for ever since it launched its Global Vision branding which split its lenses into three Sports, Contemporary and Art categories, back at Photokina 2012.

The Sports range is designed specifically for action photography and for  telephotos – as the name suggests. The concept, according to Sigma, is to create “high-level optical performance and expressive power” which is evidenced by robust construction and a high degree of customisation.

So far the Sigma Sports range has comprised of the 120-300mm F2.8
DG OS HSM, 500mm F4 DG OS HSM, 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM, and the very recently introduced 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM. “Bigma”

But as the 70-200mm f/2.8 is the one telephoto lens that practically every professional photographer owns – it is the one that every pro and enthusiast has been hoping would get the S for Sports treatment. And now it is here…

Announced back at Photokina 2018 in September the new 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM | Sports is both dustproof and splashproof. The fast telephoto is constructed of magnesium alloy and offers both Intelligent Optical Stabilisationn (OS) and high-speed autofocus thanks to a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM). It incorporates ten low-dispersion elements for optimal quality, and its 11-bladed rounded diaphragm means it’s useful for portraiture as well as fast action. It’ll be available for Canon EF, Nikon F and Sigma SA DSLR mounts.

The new lens will supercede the non-weather-sealed Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM which was first introduced back at the beginning of 2010.
