Fujifilm’s popular mirrorless XT-2 gets a major upgrade Not to be outdone by the latest announcements from Nikon and Canon, Fujifilm has announced its replacement for its popular X-T2 mirrorless camera. The new Fujifilm X-T3 boasts a small increase in resolution, but a big boost in processing power, autofocus performance and especially in video capabilities. The new, fourth-generation X-Trans sensor has 26.1 million pixels, an increase of roughly 2 million pixels over the previous model, but Fujifilm says the image quality is better than ever, thanks to a new and more powerful X-Processor 4 image processor. The autofocus system gets an upgrade too, with no fewer than 2.16 million phase detection pixels arrayed across the image frame. These work alongside the more powerful processor to offer autofocus speeds 1.5x faster than before, enhanced subject tracking ability, enhanced face/eye detection and sensitivity down to -3EV. Its continuous shooting speeds are impressive too. The X-T3 can shoot at up to 30fps using its electronic shutter in 1.25x crop mode or 11fps in normal shooting. At the 11fps setting it has an exceptionally good buffer capacity of 145 lossless compressed raw files. The new camera can capture 4K video at up to 60p saving it internally as 4:2:0 10-bit footage. As Fujifilm points out, this is the first APS-C camera to achieve this feat. The only other consumer-level mirrorless camera to achieve this is the Panasonic GH5S, but that uses a smaller Micro Four Thirds sensor and can only capture 10-megapixel still images. Fujifilm X-T3: pricing and availability Even the pricing is impressive. The X-T3 will go on sale from 30 September for £1,349/$1,499 body only and £1,699/$1,899 with Fujifilm’s 18-55mm kit lens.
